Head collars are becoming more popular for people having difficulties walking their dog on leash. A head collar is a device made of nylon straps that fits over your dog's head and muzzle and the leash attaches under the dog's head. There are different brands on the market and every instructor would have his or her favourite but they all essentially do the same job. They control the direction of the dog's head and thus, its body.

They are based on the design of a horse's bridle; after all you wouldn't put a flat collar on a horse and expect to have control over it. A head collar works in exactly the same way. They inhibit the dog's ability to pull because no force is being exerted on the dog's neck or chest. Instead the straps grip the dog's head tightly and a handler can control most dogs with just one hand.

Dogs are born problem walkers. They can't help it. All animals have something called resistance opposition: when force is applied to them to go one way, they stiffen up and pull the other. When you walk a young puppy they will run off and pull, stop dead in their tracks or weave menacingly in between your legs. If you don't pay special attention to training at this early stage, you will find that you will have worse problems later on.

A dog of any size that pulls constantly will not be taken out for a walk because it becomes too difficult for the owner; this is especially true of medium to large breed dogs that are very strong. Going for a walk is also a simulation of a pack hunt and very important for your dog's psychological and physiological well being.

I was first introduced to them over ten years ago when I had a border collie that preferred to crush her windpipe then slow down. Within a few days, I had gone from having my arms stretched and pulled and hating walking her to a pleasant and relaxed stroll around the block. I also took her for longer walks because it was easy and enjoyable.

I come across people all the time who have purchased a head collar but for one reason or another didn't have much success using them to control their dog. This has always baffled me. They are easy to put on once you understand which strap goes where and once fitted correctly a dog won't be able to get it off. I was using them before I became a dog trainer and sold hundreds over the years in my shop.

When you are using them it is important to walk with a loose leash that droops from under the dog's head down to approximately level with its front legs and then up to you. If you pull or jerk on the leash you may cause permanent damage to the back of the dog's head. These devices are not designed for this.

If your dog pulls, simply stop and turn it around. Use treats to encourage good walking techniques and always encourage your dog when it is doing the right thing. If your dog lunges or jumps up at you, stop, put the dog in the sit, wait a couple of seconds and then move off again. Your dog will learn that if it wants to smell and see all those delicious things in your neighbourhood there are some rules that apply about being a well mannered pooch on the other end of the leash.

It can take a few weeks for a dog to feel comfortable wearing a head collar. Some people don't give them enough time and throw them in the cupboard and give up. Don't. Once your dog has become accustomed to wearing one you'll both enjoy walking so much more.

The use of digital signage is varied and diverse, which means the background, knowledge and skill brought to creating content to be delivered via this powerful medium is just as diverse and varied.

Consider the stark differences between a four-star hotel chain that's decided at the corporate level to use digital signs throughout its properties to welcome guests, offer wayfinding and promote various features and amenities. Now think about the local sports bar that's added digital signs to promote featured drinks and menu items while patrons quench their thirst and watch the game.

These are two entirely different types of businesses, with dramatically different resources to spend on digital signage content, varied levels of experience with using media to reach the public and quite diverse ideas about what they would like to accomplish with digital signs.

Regardless of these differences, however, the hotel chain and single sports bar -along with all other digital signage users- should share one common characteristic when it comes to digital signage: They need to determine their return on investment -not simply on the hardware and software needed but also on the digital content to be used.

Determining ROI on digital signage hardware and software is pretty straightforward. Simply divide the expense of both by their anticipated useful life in months or years. (For this example, I'll use months.) Then subtract this monthly expense from the revenue generated by the digital signs and divide this difference by the monthly expense.

For example, the ROI of a simple, single-sign system costing $6000 for hardware, software and display would look like this. Assuming a useful life of five years, or 60 months, $100 of expense should be assigned to each month of the system's useful life. If the sign generates an additional $150 in business per month, then the ROI in this example is 50 percent [that is $150 (revenue) - $100 (monthly expense of signage) = $50/$100 (monthly expense of signage) =.5].

The same sort of ROI equation can be applied to digital signage content; however, there are a few wrinkles to consider that make doing so a little trickier. First, consider that the useful life of content will be far shorter than that of the hardware and software. To be effective, that is to consistently attract the attention of patrons, content must be fresh and relevant. Thus, in a retail setting, the useful life of content will likely be measured in weeks, and possibly even days during certain times of the year.

Second, the expense side of the equation is a little more complex when it comes to digital signage content. For instance, will content be created in-house or by an outside agency? If in-house, will a new employee be required, or will an existing graphic artist take on the responsibility. Will elements of content created once be repurposed again and again in successive campaigns, thus requiring apportionment of content expenses across multiple uses? Will "free" content, such as an RSS feed, be leveraged in some campaigns and not others, thus impacting digital content expenses differently? Will the digital content be used across in multiple locations so a portion of the expense can be assigned to each location?

Third, digital signage content frequently has nothing to do with commerce. When revenue generation is not the goal of the sign, determining the ROI on content gets a little squishy. Considerations such as goodwill created among the public are much harder to quantify than dollars and cents.

Even though determining the return on investment of creating digital signage content can be difficult, it is essential. After all, doing so is the logical first step in assessing the value of any given digital signage content campaign.

1. There are a lot of vegetarians out there

If you are a vegetarian you may sometimes feel a little lonely. You scour menus searching for the veggie option (hoping it isn't mushroom risotto - or worse: vegetable stack) and most of your friends and family eat meat. Yet in actual fact, there are many, many vegetarians in the world. Millions! In India it is estimated that over 350 million people are vegetarian. In Taiwan, around 13% of people are vegetarian.

If you live in the UK you may be interested to know that as many as four million of you are vegetarian. In Brazil 8% of the population (that's 15.2 million people) are said to be vegetarian. In the United States, 13% of the population regard themselves as either vegetarian or vegan.

So you are not alone. Someone just needs to tell the restaurants.

2. Vegetarians do not eat fish (or chicken)

Vegetarians hate being asked if they eat fish. By definition, a vegetarian does not eat animals - whether they are from the land or the sea. Where the problem lies is you may have met a fish-eating vegetarian. Or rather, someone who eats fish and no other animals and then labels themselves vegetarian. They are not vegetarian. Such people are actually called pescetarians.

3. Vegetarians do get enough protein

There's another question vegetarians get asked all too often: where do you get your protein from? It's the sort of question that feels like the one trick meat eaters have up their sleeve and it's not a very good one. Mainly because they are showing their ignorance of nutrition. Protein is plentiful in a vegetarian's diet. Here's a list to get you started: nuts, beans, textured vegetable protein, tofu, cheese, lentils, peas, yogurt, broccoli, spinach, avocado, soy and quinoa. Furthermore, many people actually eat too much protein (this is the case in Australia at least). So it makes little sense to be worrying about a person's protein intake, especially when so many people are unable to meet their daily fruit and veg requirements.

4. Vegetarians have a lower risk of developing heart disease

People may be vegetarian for ethical or religious reasons. However, there is a positive consequence to your health if you are vegetarian. Vegetarians are less likely to develop heart disease. This is not the only benefit however. Vegetarianism can also reduce your risk of developing high blood pressure, diabetes and some cancers (including breast, colorectal and ovarian). Vegetarians are less likely to become obese. When you consider how prevalent these diseases are on society, this is good news indeed.

In my first point I stated that there are many vegetarians in the world. It is not surprising then to learn that there are a whole bunch of celebrities out there who are vegetarian and vegan. 1952 - Armi Kuusela (Finland)

For the first time in history, the host Olympic country- the Games of the 15th Olympiad were held at Helsinki in 1952-- earned the universal trophy as Armi Kuusela triumphed in the first annual contest on July 28, 1952. Despite not being considered one of the heavy-favorites, among 30 entries, she became the first Miss Universe - the world's most well-known beauty contest-- at Long Beach, CA. In the meantime, Miss Kuusela was among the national idols from Finland such as Paavo Nurmi, Harry Larva and Hannes Kolehmainen.

1953 - Christiane Martel (France)

France has won praise for its pretty girls. An evidence of this occurred in July 1953 when Christiane Martel -often referred to as one of the most beautiful queens in Miss Universe history-put France on the world map after being crowned Miss Universe by outgoing queen Armi Kuusela from Finland. Miss France 1953 was elected Miss Universe from a field of 26 entries. In fact, her win at Long Beach, inspired several women to participate in the annual pageant. She was the second native of Europe to win the event. Certainly one cannot discuss on Miss Universe without paying homage to Christian Martel.

1954 - Miriam Stevenson (SCarolina/America)

In a memorable victory that seemed difficult a few years earlier, Miss United States of America, Miriam Stevenson, a blonde from Winnsboro (South Carolina), captured the title, after beating other 33 national entries at Long Beach. USA had experienced a breakthrough year in 1953 when Mirna Rae Hansen, a native of Chicago (Illinois), came close to winning the title. The new winner was crowned by last year's winner, Christiane Martel from France. But that was not all, of course. Upon donning the crown, Miss Stevenson became the first North American beauty queen to win an international pageant in history. She is one of South Carolina's best-known beautiful girls alongside names like Shawn Weatherly and Lu Parker.

1955 -- Hillevi Rombin (Sweden)

Despite her initial popularity and personal charisma, the favorite Maribel Arrieta, who had been compared in her appearance with American actress Marilyn Monroe, did not win the trophy. Surprisingly, the judges chose Hillevi Rombin of Sweden. In one of the most memorable finals, Miss Sweden, Hillevi Rombin, was crowned MU after defeating El Salvador's Maribel Arrieta Gálvez. In fact, Sweden had its golden age in the 50s. A year ago, the Scandinavian nation had finished among the top five in the contest.

1956 - Carol Morris (Iowa/America)

After a disappointing participation in 1955, USA made history in 1956 as Carol Morris, lived up to her fame like one of the most stunning girls in the world upon becoming Miss Universe, an event which several Americans considered to be their birthright. Miss Morris successfully consolidated America's return to MU title. She was the second U.S woman to win the title in the contest's 5-year history. She, who hails from Otturnwa (Iowa), had been handpicked by a notable international jury, among them Max Factor and Dorothy Kirsten.

1957 - Gladys Zender (Peru)

Peru came to world attention when its national delegate, Gladys Zender, picked up the title. Zender's win ended North Atlantic's five-year domination of Miss Universe. Meanwhile, at that time, a Peruvian newspaper devoted an entire page in the main section of the paper to Miss Zender. She was the first woman from her region, Latin America, to win the world award. Upon winning the award, she made her first international speech and assumed the role of "Ambassador of the world" visiting a host of cities in Latin America, Europe and the States. On the other hand, Peru's Zender has preserved her image as one of the most respected Miss Universes in history.

1958 - Luz Marina Zuluaga (Colombia)

The judges chose a relatively unknown beauty queen of Colombia, Luz Maria Zuluaga, as Miss Universe. Upon her abrupt win, Colombia practically declared Zuluaga a "national treasure". Paradoxically, she came in second place to Miss Antioquia, Doris Gil de Santamaria, at the 1957 Miss Colombia Pageant. Nonetheless, Gil de Santamaria renounced her crown and was replaced by Zuluaga. She was elected Miss Universe from a field of 36 entries. In the course of her reign, she changed her residence by America, but did not changed her love for Colombia, among the most respected democracies in the developing world since the late 50s. Today few Colombians will forget Zuluaga's win.

1959 - Akiko Kojima (Japan)

Miss Japan, Akiko Kojima, pulled off one of the greatest upsets in Miss Universe history as she, who worked as a model in Tokyo, captured the title in the late 1950s. Since then, Kojima's achievement was hailed as a win for Asia. Nonetheless, Kojima's victory was not well received in Italy. While Japan celebrated her win, at Rome there were protests against the results after Italy's contestant Maria Grazia Buccella -the favorite at the 8th Miss Universe Beauty Pageant- had been eliminated in the first round. Certainly, Japan had "hurt the pride of Italy", home to a host of legendary beauties such as Gina Lollobrigida and Sofia Loren. Miss Kojima was born on October 29, 1936 in the capital city of Japan.
